As a teenager, he felt he was invincible, and that successes would keep piling up. He made enough money to buy a duplex at the suggestion of his father. When Tony was 17, skateboarding was going through a boom and he profited from it. He started competing at age 12 and became a professional at 14. His family supported him in getting into the discipline because it helped him manage his excess energy. Hawk fell in love with skateboarding when his friends took him to a park where he saw kids doing tricks in the air. Because of this, he was put in a class for gifted children. It turned out that his restlessness came from his tremendous intelligence: he scored 144 on an IQ test. He was a hyperactive child so his parents had him tested. Tony Hawk is not only a skateboarding legend: he’s a pop culture icon who influenced an entire generation in more ways than we can measure.Īlso known for his alias Birdman, Anthony Frank Hawk was born in San Diego California in 1968. ![]()
